Coalition Government to invest a further $48 million in the ACT

The Coalition Government will invest $48 million in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) in 2016-17 under its Financial Assistance Grant programme to support better infrastructure for Canberra residents.

This critical Coalition Government funding will deliver a range of improvements to ACT community infrastructure including better roads, community facilities, and local amenities.

Minister for Local Government and Territories, Fiona Nash, said the Australian Capital Territory will receive this funding in quarterly payments with the first payment of more than $12 million being paid this week.

“The Coalition Government is committed to supporting residents of the Australian Capital Territory and is determined to ensure that Canberra residents have the infrastructure they need as a community to continue to grow and prosper.” Minister Nash said.

Assistant Minister for Social Services and Multicultural Affairs and Senator for the ACT, Zed Seselja, said that today’s funding announcement was a sign of the Coalition Government’s strong and continuing commitment to the people of Canberra.

“The Coalition Government understands that ongoing investment is vital to maintaining our city’s wonderful lifestyle, and to ensuring that Canberra remains a great place to live, work and to raise a family,” Minister Seselja said.

Minister Nash said the Coalition Government trusted local government authorities to deliver this funding responsibly.

“This funding is untied, meaning the ACT Government can deliver on local priorities that it has identified and in line with local community input. We recognise local government is key to transitioning local communities for the future and we are investing in local government to support that future.

“I have been fortunate to meet many shires, councils and other local government agencies during my time as a regional New South Wales based Senator and Minister. This funding will help address some of the issues they often speak to me about, ensuring residents have the best possible community to live in.”

In addition to Financial Assistance Grants, the Coalition Government delivers a range of other infrastructure programmes which benefit ACT residents, including:

  • Roads to Recovery

  • Black Spot Programme

  • Bridges Renewal

  • Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Programme

  • National Highway Upgrade Programme

  • Stronger Communities Programme
