The safety of two “black spot” intersections along Southern Cross Drive will be substantially improved thanks to Federal Liberal and Nationals Government funding.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said today’s announcement would see $1.8 million delivered to the Territory to improve the safety of Southern Cross Drive under the Black Spot Program’s 2019-20 funding round.

“The funding will substantially improve the safety Southern Cross Drive in Scullin through signalising two intersections, where there has been a high incidence of casualty crashes,” Mr McCormack said.

“The project will be delivered over the next two financial years.

“This investment is part of the Federal Government’s commitment to building safer roads right across the nation and getting commuters home to their families sooner and safer no matter where they live.”

Assistant Minister for Road Safety and Freight Transport Scott Buchholz said the Black Spot projects in the ACT would make an important contribution towards reducing serious injuries and deaths on the Territory’s roads.

“The Black Spot Program targets road locations nationally where crashes are occurring, improving safety by funding measures such as traffic signals and roundabouts at these dangerous locations,” Mr Buchholz said.

“The Black Spot projects being funded in the ACT are an important contribution towards reducing the national road toll.

Senator for the ACT and Chair of the ACT Black Spot Consultative Panel, Zed Seselja said the panel that reviews priorities for the program, focussing on intersections that have been the site of a serious crash.

“The Liberal-National Government is delivering $1.8 million to improve the safety of this section of road, to get Canberrans home safely.”

“Last year we tragically saw a fatality on Southern Cross Drive. I am proud to be a member of a government committed to improving the safety of Canberrans, and look forward to the delivery of this project.”
