Senator the Hon Zed Seselja, Liberal Senator for the ACT, has welcomed the Coalition Government’s agreement with the ACT today to deliver record funding to the ACT public hospital system.
“The agreement today will deliver $2.6 billion over the five years from 2020-21 to 2024-25. This is almost double what was delivered under the last ALP budget,” Senator Seselja said.
“While I welcome this extra funding today from the Coalition Government, the ACT Government also needs to be doing more to ensure the funding they receive from the Commonwealth is spent efficiently and effectively. ACT residents need to be getting better outcomes and not simply more of the same,” Senator Seselja said.
As part of a new long-term agreement across the states and territories, the Coalition Government will provide an additional $30 billion for all Australian public hospitals, totalling almost $128 billion over the five years from 2020-21.
The Agreements also establishes a comprehensive reform processes to improve Australians’ health outcomes and decrease avoidable demand for public hospital services through long-term system wide reforms including;
- better coordinated care, particularly for patients with complex and chronic disease;
- funding and pricing for safety and quality, to avoid funding unnecessary or unsafe care;
- reducing avoidable readmissions to hospital;
- paying for value and outcomes;
- joint planning and funding at a local level;
- nationally cohesive health technology assessment;
- empowering people through health literacy; prevention and wellbeing; and
- enhanced health data.
The Coalition Government welcomes the agreement and will work with each state and territory to continue to deliver record funding and together deliver the best health care for Australians.
“This is great news for all Canberrans. I will continue to fight to deliver better health outcomes for the ACT,” Senator Seselja concluded.
